How Do You Know You Have the Right Ring Size?
There are a few things that may happen if a ring doesn’t fit properly. This first possibility could be that the ring is too large. A ring that is too large has a greater potential to slip off of one's finger. During daily activities, a ring that falls off of a finger may go unnoticed and will result in the loss of the ring. The second possibility is that the ring may be too small. This may result in a ring that cuts off the circulation of the finger. The third possibility may be that the ring becomes difficult to get on and off. In extreme cases, the ring may be extremely difficult to get off resulting in needing to have the ring cut off.
Another possibility may be that your knuckle is larger than the base of your finger. Purchasing a ring that fits over the knuckle comfortably may result in a ring that is loose on the base of the finger. Purchasing a ring that fits comfortably on the base of the finger would mean that you may struggle to get it over the knuckle.
The best way to find the perfect ring size for a situation like this would be to take two measurements, one of the knuckle, and one at the base of the finger. After taking the two measurements, go with a ring size that is in the middle of the two measurements. (I.e. if the knuckle measurement is a size 10 and the base of the finger measurement is a 9, go with a ring size of 9.5).
Both a ring that is too small and a ring that is too large are not ideal. The best way to prevent a misfitting ring is to follow a few of our tips below to ensure that you are getting the best ring size for you or the person receiving the ring as a gift.

DIY At-Home Ring Sizing
For this method, all that you need is string or yarn, a marker, scissors, and a ruler or tape measure. To begin, take the string and wrap it around the finger that the person will wear the ring on. Next, take the marker and put a line in the place where the end of the string completes a circle around the finger. Straighten the piece of string or yarn out so that it is now in a straight line and use the scissors to cut the string right at the line. Then take the piece of string that you are left with and measure the length in millimeters or inches.
Consult our ring sizing chart to determine the final ring size. For instance, if your string measures 2.04 inches / 51.8 millimeters, your ring size will match up with a size 6 ring.
Figure Out Their Ring Size and Keep it a Secret!
Phone a Friend
A great way to discreetly figure out someone's ring size is to ask one of their friends. The friend may not know the ring size right away but would be able to ask questions or use other methods to figure out your gift recipient's ring size.Borrow Their Ring
If you are able to get your hands on a ring that the person owns, you can either use the printable ring sizing chart or the string method to find the ring size. Using the ring sizing chart method will follow all of the same steps that are outlined on the PDF ring sizing chart. The only difference will be that instead of measuring the distance around someone's finger, you would measure the inside of their ring. For a more DIY method, take the ring and lay it flat on a surface. Take the string and loop it around the inside of the ring’s opening until the end of the string completes the round loop and makes a mark. Take a pair of scissors and cut the string at the line. Take the segment of string that you have cut off and lay it flat next to a ruler.
Take the measurement in inches or millimeters and match the measurements up with the ring size from our printable ring sizing chart. For instance, if your string measures 2.04 inches / 51.8 millimeters, your ring size will match up with a size 6 ring.
The most difficult part of this method is getting the ring back into their jewelry collection without them noticing!
